Octopus sold for just £1

The site of the former Octopus restaurant at La Vallette, which was destroyed by fire last year, has been bought by its tenants for just £1.

The remains of the building have since been cleared but there has been no activity on the site in recent months.

It was sold by Yvonne Burford to the owners of the restaurant tenancy, Mickael Pesrin and Delphine Pesrin-Auder, who – as M&D Ltd – bought the site on 31 July.

The devastating fire broke out in the early hours of 24 February last year and work has yet to start on rebuilding the restaurant.

At the time the Pesrins, who had run Octopus on the site since 2016, assured customers that it would return, albeit after a lengthy closure.

Since then they have focused on their sister restaurant, Dhaka in Le Truchot, the site of the former Petit Bistro, and have given updates only via social media.

In October last year they said that they were busy with architects and designers on plans for a new restaurant building on the site but as yet no planning applications have been published.

The remains of the building have since been cleared but there has been no activity on the site in recent months.

The police investigation into the blaze found nothing suspicious and was closed in May 2024.

The Pesrins declined to comment on the purchase of the site when approached by the Guernsey Press.

Deputy Burford issued a statement on social media following publication of the story.

'After the total destruction of the restaurant last year, various insurance negotiations, lease limitations and obligations and costings have played a significant role in determining a way forward.

'This has ultimately resulted in the transfer of the site to the tenants at no cost.

'While this is not at all the outcome I would have wanted, it has been a complex and difficult 18 months and I am now free to focus fully on my responsibilities as a people's deputy.'

Even though she will have no further interest in the property she said that, as the Development & Planning Agency president, she would recuse herself from involvement in any planning application for the site in the future.
