'Cyclists need safe routes'

CYCLISTS are not being protected by Guernsey's justice system, the chairman of a pro-cycling group said yesterday.

Guernsey Bicycle Group chairman Rollo de Sausmarez, pictured, has called for more to be done to protect cyclists, following the Royal Court's decision to clear truck driver Nigel Simon, 50, of causing death by dangerous driving at Salerie Corner.

Nigel Simon, 50, was also found not guilty of an alternative charge of driving without due care and attention following the fatal accident on 26 April last year.

'It seems that cyclists are not protected by the justice system when riding on the cycle path.' he said. 'It's a problem in the UK too.

'Cycling is pretty safe and hasn't suddenly got more dangerous overnight, but we need the States to make things better and safer.'

Mr de Sausmarez said the authorities must remove ambiguity and educate road users about who has right of way when cycle paths and roads cross.
