ISLANDERS are being asked to give their views on new food safety legislation which would mean that food produced in Guernsey will have to be traceable to its production source, among other changes.

Comments on the proposed legislation are being sought by the Health and Social Services Department, with a consultation running until 18 September.

Legislation will seek to consolidate and modernise around 30 pieces of existing food safety legislation into one document that aims to better the safety of the food chain, improve food hygiene standards and reduce the risk of food poisoning.

Alongside compulsory tracing of food production the hygiene of supplementary feed for farm animals will also be addressed.

Dr Val Cameron, Director of Environmental Health, said the consultation was 'an important opportunity' for all local manufacturers, producers and importers of food as well as others, to get involved and share their views while the ordinance was still in draft form.

'It's about protecting the Guernsey brand, so anything packaged in Guernsey will have to say 'Made in Guernsey'.

'I want to be clear that this will only affect packaged foods, so rules on the sale of hedge-veg and eggs on the side of the road will not change, for example.'
