'Alderney's economy is facing a crisis'
ALDERNEY is facing critical economic problems which will be mirrored in Guernsey, it has been warned.
Leading independent economist Professor Geoffrey Wood was speaking as the co-author of Guernsey's latest annual independent fiscal policy review, which painted a bleak picture of Alderney's economic outlook and challenges.
The review warned that a shortage of employment opportunities, combined with a rapidly ageing population, had resulted in a fall in the number of Alderney residents of working age.
Provision of services to a small population was also inevitably more expensive than providing similar services in Guernsey and the smaller the population becomes the 'more marked' this difference would be.
'Alderney has the same problems as Guernsey, just much, much more acute,' said Professor Wood.
