The owner of almost 30 years said he was frying chicken but forgot to put the overhead fan on. A blaze soon spread and black smoke billowed out of the St Peter Port establishment.
'There was smoke everywhere. I called the fire brigade and tried to put it out with my fire extinguisher,' Mr Goncalves said.
'It was just me in there but I am fine,' he said.
'It is going to be a mess in there.'
