Free festival is something to really chalk about

Saumarez Park will once again come alive with vibrant chalk designs on Saturday as the Chalk Art Festival returns for its third year.

Organised by Ross Le Brun, creator of the Facebook page Dad Makes Stuff, it invites islanders of all ages to take part in the free, creative event.

Inspired by similar festivals in the US, Mr Le Brun brought the idea to Guernsey to offer something accessible and inclusive.

‘It’s a relaxed, chilled atmosphere,’ he said.

‘You turn up, get free chalk, and are given a space on the path to create whatever you like. If you want more space, you can have it, it’s that simple.’

The festival has grown steadily since its launch, drawing hundreds of participants and spectators. Families, visitors, and art lovers gather throughout the day to admire the colourful creations, which in previous years have included dinosaurs, Peppa Pig, and Moomin characters.

Mr Le Brun is passionate about keeping the event free and open to all.

‘There’s not a lot to do on the island without a cost,’ he said.

‘This is something that doesn’t leave kids out just because their parents can’t afford expensive activities.’

Attendees are welcome to bring picnics and spend the day enjoying the park.

But with limited parking available, organisers recommend walking, cycling, or using public transport to reach the site.

Mr Le Brun hopes the festival will continue to grow and evolve, potentially expanding to other locations, and incorporating more durable materials in future editions.

A rain shower or the passing of time and footfall will soon see the creativity erased.

  • The festival is free and takes place from 10am to 3pm. All the chalk is supplied, just bring your imagination.
