Ramsar status is welcomed by residents of 'time warp' Herm
HERM islanders have welcomed news of the island's new Ramsar designation and hope it might increase the island's profile.
After more than a year of consideration, the wetland conservation designation was officially granted for Herm, Jethou and the Humps this week.
Herm's managing director for services, Simon George, had given the proposals his full backing and said he was pleased the designation had been granted.
'We love and adore Herm and we really appreciate its natural beauty,' he said.
'It's great to get recognition for that. We hope this will draw more people to come and see the natural beauty of Herm.'
He described the island as being in a time warp, which was part of what made it so special.
Herm has featured prominently in recent Visit Guernsey adverts.
Marketing and tourism director Mike Hopkins said he was delighted with the designation.
