It’s pub politics for election candidates

Punters at the Mariners Inn were finishing their Friday with pints with politicians and wine with wannabe deputies.

Among the throng were several current deputies, including Andy Cameron, Simon Vermeulen, Adrian Gabriel, Tina Bury and Yvonne Burford, and new candidates including Sally Gilman, Chris Machon, Paul Montague and Tom Rylatt.

Deputy Cameron’s original idea, described as a casual ‘pub after work meet-up’, and not a debate or a hustings, is a chance to put names to faces and pop a question in a relaxed atmosphere.

This was the second incarnation of the event, with previous events held at the Britannia and the Cock & Bull pubs last month.

Deputy Cameron said he came up with the concept of ‘a drink after work with your deputies’ due to the challenge that island-wide voting presents candidates with traditional door knocks.

‘The punters are a bit non-plussed when we first all come in,’ he said.

‘But it’s a chance to engage with the public, which can be difficult especially with younger voters.’

After one at the Mariners, the candidates were moving on to La Fontaine Inn.
