VALPYS has had to employ more staff to cope with recalled tumble dryers by Whirlpool, the new owner of the Hotpoint and Indesit brands, following fears of a fire risk.

The majority of models produced between 2004 and 2015 under Hotpoint, Indesit and Creda brands are affected.

National media reports are highlighting the fire risk, however Valpy's director Nick Lawlor said it was a very small one.

Lint/fluff build-up can find its way to a void at the back of dryers. In rare cases the build-up can be ignited by the heating element.

The design concern was announced by Whirlpool at the end of November.

Valpy's has a list of more than 1,000 appliances to modify.

'So far we have had about 700 local owners of the affected tumble dryers contact us directly, as well as a list of over 500 from Hotpoint, where people have registered their details online or on the telephone with them,' said Mr Lawlor.
