Plans to repair stained glass window at St John’s Church

THE wardens of St John’s Church have applied for permission to repair the stained glass window in the chancel on its southwest facade – an endeavour that would also involve replastering works and repairs to historic monuments within the chancel itself.

The application comes as the window’s iron frame has corroded over time, leading to leaching rust damaging nearby plaster, and several window panels becoming distorted or showing signs of cracking.

The windows, given their age, are also thought to be losing their waterproofing capabilities, as their putty may have become hardened with time. The walls surrounding them, meanwhile, have shown signs of salt contamination and dampness, requiring potential replastering.

Once it commences, this repair work would mark the second stage in restoring the church’s chancel, as permission was granted for the southwest elevation to be repointed with lime mortar – work that was completed in 2023. With said mortar now dried out, the wardens are hoping that the restorative works can continue.
