Pride of Guernsey: St John Ambulance staff 'first to care'

ST JOHN AMBULANCE is the 'life support' of the community, its chief officer has said, as he backed the Pride of Guernsey Emergency Hero of the Year Award.

Sponsored by Rossborough, the accolade is one of 12 brand-new awards from the Guernsey Press aimed at celebrating those who do extraordinary things every day but who rarely get recognition.

That can be because, since it is their job they are ineligible for current awards, or simply because no award for them exists.

Yet without the contributions of those in each of the dozen categories, including Emergency Hero, life in our community would be very different.

Jon Beausire urged people to send in their nominations. He said those who work for or volunteer with St John were on hand and ready to respond to emergencies no matter what the hour.

It would be wonderful to recognise that and hear people's special stories, he said.

'St John is the life-support of the island, working at the heart of our community providing the highest quality event

first aid, emergency ambulance and rescue services. The provision of our services can make the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

'Any recognition, no matter how big or small, is greatly appreciated by our hard working and dedicated team. A very special part of my job is receiving appreciation from people so grateful for the service St John has provided them or their loved ones.

'There are sad times when despite all of our best efforts you cannot save a person's life, but you can and must care.'

In fact the organisation's ethos is 'first to care', he said, and that is exactly what it does.

'Caring for others is what I am passionate about and we do everything to ensure that we continue to deliver this at a high standard.

'Our team is made up of devoted employees and volunteers who provide a continued service to the community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. During every bank holiday, the busy festive period or just in the middle of night whilst most of the Bailiwick is sleeping we are taking calls, responding to members of the public and keeping the island safe.

'To be able to nominate individuals, to publicly say thank-you and to recognise the work they do for going above and beyond their duties to look after members of our community is a fantastic acknowledgement and I look forward to proudly reading the nominations.'

Nominate now: Who is your Emergency Hero of the Year? Send in your nomination and as well as being able to say a special thank you, could win them a prize worth £1,000.
