Pride of Guernsey: 'Re-igniting music scene for the young'
'A FANTASTIC service re-igniting young people's love for the Guernsey music scene and creating opportunities for young people to both play gigs and hear live music in a safe environment.'
That's what Rebecca Cox said about her nominee for the Moonpig-sponsored Arts Contribution of the Year Award, Sound Guernsey.
The brainchild of husband and wife Jon and Annika Bisson, the aim was to provide regular gigs for 11-to-17-year-olds. Teaming up with the management of Fermain Valley Hotel, Jodie Webber and Tim Coates, the first Sound Guernsey gig was in November 2015 and featured Buffalo Huddleston and Honest Crooks.
'We realised that other than a couple of festivals each year, there wasn't really anywhere for under 18s to go and see any live bands,' said Jon before the first gig. 'So I thought, ''let's see if we can give it a go''.'
The last of the series was at the end of May and was headlined by Static Alice, but there will be a summer party at the Fermain Tavern featuring bands that have played before, including Blakalaska and Asylum Seekas.
'The gigs have been consistently impressive with solid line-ups, featuring both well-known bands and newer bands of all ages. 'I think that Sound have done a brilliant job,' added Rebecca.
