The ex-Southampton and England star said the state-of-the-art centre was one that could really benefit people of the Channel Islanders and encouraged them islanders to support the fundraising efforts if they could.

The campaign has already benefited from a six-figure contribution from Guernsey, when the Wilkinson Trust gave £1m. to the cause.

The University of Southampton is leading the campaign to raise £25m. to build the new centre, dedicated to cancer immunology research and based at Southampton General Hospital.

It will be the first of its kind in the UK and will bring together world-leading specialists.

Le Tissier said he heard about the campaign through being a patron of the Dave Wellman Cancer Trust, which had given funds to the cause.
