Guernsey Met senior met officer Martin Crozier said temperatures taken on Monday were close to the record of 18.3 degrees, which dates back to 2014.

He attributed the readings to warm weather and light wind.

'The sea temperatures are certainly close to a record and are in the region of 18C,' he said.

'It is possible over the next week that there could be record-breaking temperatures.'

Mr Crozier said there were two main factors which determined sea temperature, which he described as a 'natural variable' rather than any meteorological trend.

'It is a combination of things, the warm weather and the lack of wind that we have seen recently,' he said.

'This enables a warm layer of sea to build up on the surface.'
