Six-year-old German Shepherd Iggy has been working with the dog handling unit for a couple of weeks, having already served several years with the Surrey Police.
Handler PC Chris Williamson said that he had gone to the UK to look for a replacement dog for his previous German Shepherd, Delta, which had to be put down after contracting cancer.
He put a couple of dogs through their paces at the Devon and Cornwall Police in January, but said the animals assigned to him did not quite make the standard required.
As a result, the force was offered Iggy by Surrey Police and he arrived in the island at the beginning of March.
Iggy is classed as a general police dog, and as such is able to track and search for people or property and is also used to chasing criminals and detaining a suspects.
His arrival brings the force's dog unit back up to its full complement of three, with general police dog German Shepherd Ledi and drugs specialist border collie Gully completing the team.
