Cracking the Enigma code
SCIENCE and maths writer and broadcaster Simon Singh, who will be speaking at the Guernsey Literary Festival next month, will give a demonstration of a genuine Enigma code machine.
He became especially interested in code-breaking and the Enigma machine while working on his book, Fermat's Last Theorem.
'His work on mathematics is enough to confirm Turing as a super-genius, and his work in computing and artificial intelligence are also enough to make him one of the truly great figures in the history of maths and science.
'But most people know about Turing because of his code-breaking.
'As a code-breaker, Turing changed the course of the Second World War, shortened the conflict and saved countless lives.
'I realised that Turing and code-breaking deserved a book of their own.
Simon Singh's talk Cracking the Enigma Code, will be on Friday 12 May in the Festival Hub in Market Street at 1.15pm and is sponsored by Sure. For more on the festival and to book: guernseyliteraryfestival.com
