His Excellency Mr Martin Eichtinger visited the island yesterday with his wife, Kathrin, to broaden his understanding of the island and develop a working relationship between the two governments.

He met with Deputy Gavin St Pier and other members of the States of Guernsey's senior Policy & Resources committee, Home Affairs and Economic Development.

Mr Eichtinger said his meetings focused on potential links to the island, and he was impressed at how a small place like Guernsey was such a strong centre of finance.

'I really would like to say how absolutely delighted and impressed I was at the warm welcome my wife and I received from Chief Minister Gavin St Pier and the other members of the government,' he said.

'I wanted to come here to learn about Guernsey's strong finance centre and any opportunities for cooperation in Austria – be it in business, the stock exchange or in tourism.

'Now, I really want to stay in contact and work on the cooperation between Guernsey and Austrian companies.'
