Deputy Gavin St Pier was speaking after the national media broke a number of stories about where the wealthy were investing their money following a leak of millions of papers.
News of the leak – now labelled the Paradise Papers as an echo of a similar leak of financial documents, the Panama Papers, last year – first emerged at the beginning of October.
Many of the papers came from offshore law firm Appleby, which has offices in Guernsey and Jersey.
Appleby admitted some of its data had been compromised in a 2016 cyber incident where more than 13m. documents were obtained by hackers. Since then, almost 400 journalists have spent a year investigating the documents as part of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
