Men more likely to take their own life

MEN in Guernsey are far more likely to take their own lives than women.

Mind Guernsey will launch the ‘Stop Male Suicides’ campaign in the island in March as a result of the findings.

The report from the States Public Health Intelligence Unit covering 2006-2015 show recorded instances of suicide in three- year running totals.

In the most recent three-year period, 83% of those recorded age standardised suicides, above the age of 15, were male.

This year, said Guernsey Mind executive director Emily Litten, the charity is keen to raise awareness of the rates of male suicide in the island and to encourage conversation in the community about mental health issues among men.

‘Suicide is the biggest killer of men between the ages of 20 and 50, more than cancer and heart disease. This is significantly higher than in females.'
