The highest warning level of red was issued by the Met Office.

Snow is expected to start after midnight and become heavier towards the morning.

This combined with strong to gale force winds is 'likely to lead to blizzard conditions at times'.

'An accumulation of around 4 to 8cm of snow is expected across the island with significant drifting expected to occur.'

Air temperatures will rise above zero during the afternoon, but ground tempertrues will remain below freezing until later in the evening.

Snow is expected to turn mostly to rain in the afternoon, but there is a risk of freezing rain at times.
