And it’s on with show – Eisteddfod back on track

THIS year’s Eisteddfod competition is getting back on track after its opening was disrupted by last week’s snow.

Adjudicator Elizabeth Childs had managed to arrive in the island the day before the festival was due to start, said Eisteddfod secretary Barbara Minta.

‘She got in on Wednesday, which was good news, so she had Thursday to herself,’ said Mrs Minta.

The bad weather saw all classes on Thursday afternoon and evening postponed.

Friday morning’s classes were also hit and the festival did not get under way until Friday that afternoon.

Some of the missed classes are being slotted in around others this week, while some of the sessions are due to start early.

Yesterday saw all of the six classes from Thursday afternoon taking place in an extra morning session.

Despite the rescheduling, the majority of entrants were able to make the classes, said Mrs Minta.

Given the extra time, one might have imagined that another rehearsal or two could have been squeezed in by the competitors, but for the winner of the secondary school age choir class this was not the case, with Ladies’ College director of music Anthea Roue saying there hadn’t been the time.

The small group of 12 girls nonetheless took the trophy for their performance.

Mrs Minta said the last time the Eisteddfod was hit by weather problems was in 2013, when the last couple of days of the Speech and Drama section had to be cancelled.

Because the adjudicator had to fly back to the UK for other commitments, these were unable to be rescheduled.
