The two reptiles who live in the vivarium were unharmed when a heat lamp caused the wood-shavings inside it to catch fire.

Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service were called out automatically in response to the school's fire-alarm system at around 10.15pm.

The small blaze was contained and extinguished with the help of one response vehicle with a reel hose.

No other emergency services attended the call and there were no reported injuries as a result of the fire.

Crew commander Milton Le Moignan said the most important thing was that the fire alarm system and smoke detector had worked effectively.
