A draft brief is out for consultation on the potential to develop a one-hectare site on Grande Rue which could house 22 dwellings.
The site incorporates Health Services’ Briarwood property, a house called Les Blanches Pierres and hairdresser Envy, but none of these are part of the developable plot.
It also includes the 80-space car park, which may be moved as long as the provision of parking is protected.
Anne and Tony Smith, who have lived in the road for 28 years, said they were not pleased about the plans.
‘We don’t like it, the car park has always been too small. If we don’t like it we can leave, if it’s done tastefully we won’t,’ said Mr Smith.
‘I know of someone who is saving [for a first property], their wages are not that brilliant, the local market has been targeted and it’s going to be very difficult for young people.
‘There’s masses of space in Torteval and inbetween houses.
‘The services locally are going to be overwhelmed, they’re encouraging people to live here but there’s not enough services in the parish for all those people.
‘It’s very easy to see us saying we’re fed up of Guernsey and leave,’ he said.
St Martin’s douzaine is expected to comment next week.
