All emergency services attended after the crash was reported at 9.23am

A man and a woman were in the silver VW Golf which was the only vehicle involved.

The man, who was driving, was taken to hospital with what Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service watch commander Gary Sergeant said were minor injuries.

Guernsey Electricity attended and neighbours were told that power would be cut for a short time while the lamppost was made safe.

The road was closed for a time yesterday while a new one was put in place.

Paul de la Mare, 54, and self-employed, lives adjacent to where the crash occurred.

‘I was walking up the road with my two dogs and my attention was drawn to another dog in the area,’ he said.

‘Then I saw the car mount the bank and flip over. The driver was trying to get out and other people on the scene came to help. People were coming out with water and towels and it was great community spirit – something I thought was gone in this day and age. The car was definitely not speeding.’

An off-duty nurse who lives at the bottom of Route Charles also went to help. She did not wish to be named.

‘I heard a massive crash followed by a second one,’ she said. ‘My son went out and said a car was on its roof in the road and that somebody had been injured.

‘The car behind had stopped and the driver got out to help. I helped until the ambulance and fire crews arrived.’
