Pierre’s record-breaking catch a bream come true
A RECORD-BREAKING bream has been caught in Guernsey waters.
Moving to Guernsey sparked Pierre Joubert’s interest in spearfishing and, over the last two years, he has been looking to catch as big a fish as he can.
On Friday, he posted a couple of pictures and a video on the Facebook page Spearfishing Guernsey of the gilt-head bream he caught off Bordeaux.
‘Every now and then you get a fish of a lifetime. A moment in time that will stay with you a lifetime. Thank you Guernsey!’ he posted.
Commenters were very excited, congratulating Mr Joubert on his impressive catch that ‘smashed’ the British record.
‘From the moment I saw the fish to pulling the trigger I was overwhelmed with excitement,’ he told the Guernsey Press. I didn’t realise how big it really was until I’d got it.’
According to www.underwaterfishing.co.uk, the heaviest gilt-head bream caught on record weighed 4.015kg and was speared in 2012.
Mr Joubert and his friends, who witnessed the catch, weighed his bream at 4.4kg.
‘It’s definitely the biggest that’s ever been speared in the UK,’ he said.
‘Gilt-head bream only started coming into Guernsey waters in the last few years, they’re also on the coast of the UK as well. They’ve been immigrating from the Mediteranean and we’ve been seeing bigger and bigger ones over the years.’
Gilt-head bream commonly reaches about 35cm in length, but may reach 70cm and weigh up to about 7.36 kilograms.
Mr Joubert’s 4.4kg fish was about 67cm long and he cooked it up on his barbecue later that day.
