Ten miles of high-capacity fibre optic cable, 9.5 miles of copper cable and 172 new network switches installed over more than 30 sites have set the foundations for the digital transformation of services in HSC resulting in what some have said is a better network and improved bedside testing.
Senior staff nurse Linda Attwool, who is responsible for taking bedside blood tests, said she could see the benefits already.
‘The LAN improvements have made a significant positive impact on how my team carry out their testing,’ she said.
‘We did not realise how much time we wasted each day trying to get a wi-fi signal to log tests as they were taken.’
The programme, which began more than a year ago, has seen an integrated wi-fi network with twice as many access points result in a tenfold increase in capacity, scaled for a 300% growth over time. Initial benefits of the improved network include an upgrade to the patient monitoring systems and bedside blood testing.
HSC president Heidi Soulsby said there were many advantages to the upgrades, saying it is a key enabler for the digital transformation at HSC to support the partnership of purpose.
‘It will help pave the way for improvements across the States of Guernsey through the Smart Guernsey programme, enabled by the States’ strategic partner Agilisys Guernsey.’
Visitors to the hospital will also be able to connect to the new network.
