Long queues for islanders dropping off green waste as site re-opens

THE CHOUET green waste site had what looked to be its busiest day ever after lockdown restrictions were eased.

All morning there was a long queue of cars and at times it stretched back all the way past the Chouet kiosk.

By 3pm there had been 732 vehicles visiting Chouet, and 196 at a new temporary site at Longue Hougue.

There were lots of trailers and it was apparent that many islanders had used the lockdown to get some gardening done, or dig for victory.

The re-opening was another symbolic milestone in the gradual deactivation of the island's lockdown measures.

But it was still a long way from normal, as the number of vehicles allowed onto the site was strictly controlled, and there were special drop off bays so that the two metre social distancing guidelines could be adhered to.

Commercial gardeners were also dropping off their waste at Mont Cuet, after they were allowed back to work on Saturday.

Tim Young had cycled down to Chouet with a trailer behind him of garden waste.

He was relieved to be finally getting rid of it.

'It's been good to have this time to work on the garden and get back to nature, it was a morale-booster for me.

'Clearly I'm not the only person who has been gardening, this queue is pretty impressive, but we seem to be moving and at least there's a good view and the sun is out.

The re-opening of the Chouet site is part of Guernsey's phase two of the exit strategy, or journey back towards a sort-of normality.

Ronald Jones had crammed his daihatsu with hedge cuttings, dormant plants and grass; he was delighted the restrictions were being lifted.

'I was really worried at one point that we would be banned from our own gardens and that would have been really hard for me.

'It's good that we getting back to close to normal, I think people were starting to lose patience with it after four weeks.

'But I was really surprised coming here at how busy the roads were, it's as though everyone has decided to come out of hibernation.'

The big backlog of green waste was anticipated and States Works had set up a temporary drop-off for green waste at Longue Hougue.

This proved to be the smart option because there were no queues and it was easy to get in and out.

Ian Toms looked like he had been very busy sprucing up the garden over the lockdown, because he was dropping off a van load.

'Four weeks of green rubbish needs to be cleared. I'm happy to see it go.'

The small step towards island normality was welcomed by Peter Carre.

'It's much better here than at Chouet, the queue was way past Ladies Bay.

'I'm 70 and I can't wait to get back to work, although older people may not have a lot of choice because they want us to wait for this vaccine, but as far as I'm concerned I'm happy to take the risk.'

The operations manager for Guernsey Waste, Sarah Robinson, outlined further changes that are happening this week.

'The household waste and recycling centre is due to reopen on Thursday but will be for the deposit of certain recyclables only – more details to be published before then which islanders should keep an eye out for.

'Islanders should also be aware that site staff will be unable to assist them in unloading their vehicles at all of our sites at this current time so they should bear this in mind before making the journey.'
