A few members of the public took up the opportunity to get to know the seven candidates, who are battling it out for six places on the parish douzaine.

‘We tried to put this on before the election so parishioners have another opportunity to meet the candidates,’ said organiser and douzenier Mary McDermott.

‘I have been organising monthly drop-ins for about three years.’

The candidates were all keen to speak to parish members and encouraged people to get involved and vote in the election, which takes place on Wednesday.

Parishioners Pete and Gay Cumming said it was important to have douzeniers to represent the public.

‘It is important to keep in touch with the people who run this island,’ Mrs Cumming said.

‘Hopefully douzeniers have their ear to the ground between us and the politicians.’

Topics they wanted to raise included paid parking, population size, and the number of cars on the island.

‘It’s going to get worse before it gets better,’ said Mr Cumming.

He said he was pleased about douzeniers’ recent efforts which enabled them to have a bench put outside their house at Upland Road.

‘They got it and it’s wonderful,’ Mrs Cumming added.

‘It’s in the bright sunshine and so peaceful.’

St Peter Port polling stations will be open from 10am-8pm on Wednesday at the Constables’ Office in Lefebvre Street and reception at Beau Sejour.
