Sniper Elite 5 is being produced by games developer Rebellion, which sent a team to the island in 2018 to view and record details of the German bunkers and equipment.

They were hosted by members of Festung Guernsey, whose project coordinator Paul Bourgaize said it was not just photos that the programmers were taking.

‘They were doing quite a bit of scanning of radio equipment and Occupation relics, hoping to build up their library of equipment, and filming at locations and taking thousands and thousands of images to build up 3D models.

‘They did a scan of the Fort Hommet headland and we could see a 3D image of it, which was interesting.’

Mr Bourgaize and his colleagues told the visitors stories of the Occupation and initially the developers said they were going to set some of the game in the island itself.

They were due to pay a return visit to collect more data but the pandemic got in the way so Mr Bourgaize said it may well be that the island’s sites will appear as parts of France, which is where the new game is set.

The game’s plot has the player as a member of a covert US Rangers operation in France during 1944 where a secret Nazi plot is uncovered.

The series is well-known for having realistic bullet physics and highly detailed and gory visuals showing the effect a bullet has on the victim.

Mr Bourgaize said he would not be playing it himself.

‘It’s not something I do, but I’ll certainly buy a copy and try to get it up and running,’ he said.

‘There are definitely people in our group who will play it.’

More stills from the game and a link to its trailer can be found on the Festung Guernsey Facebook page.

n Sniper Elite 5 is due for release on 14 February.
