Plans have been submitted by architects The Drawing Room for the redevelopment of the pavilion, which is 100 years old.

It is not a listed building, but the college said, in putting forward its plans, that it was conscious of the building’s historic nature.

A structural assessment of the building had determined that the condition of the existing balcony and the steps up to it needed more substantial remedial work beyond routine maintenance.

The planning application seeks to demolish the existing balcony and erect a replacement at first floor level, with removable canopy and flag pole.

It intends to raise the height of the balustrade to meet current safety standards and the removable ‘sun sails’ would provide functional shade in a manner which complemented the pavilion’s architectural style.

There will also be improvements to accessibility, including enhancements to the external staircase and surrounding pathway.

‘The proposed enhancements will not only improve structural integrity and safety, but also offer an opportunity to modernise the materials used, ensuring durability while preserving the building’s character,’ said a spokeswoman for the college.

She added that the college had a proactive programme of planned maintenance on its various premises.
