Beetons in fundraising opening for Ukraine
BEETONS Fish and Chip Shop will be opening its doors tomorrow to raise money for Ukraine.
Every penny spent in the shop between 4.30 and 9.30pm will be donated directly to a Ukraine cause to be decided.
‘A lot of our staff are Latvian and it was their idea because it’s really close to home for them,’ said co-owner Kim Ashplant.
‘We are very proud of them as they are also giving up their wages for it.’
The staff at Beetons do not have a fundraising goal, however are hoping to take in the amount of money equivalent to a busy Friday night.
The shop does not usually open on a Sunday and so Mrs Ashplant hoped that islanders would take advantage of it.
‘We often have people asking if we can open on a Sunday, but we are opening just for this cause,’ she said.
‘We hope people will trade in their Sunday roast dinners and have fish and chips this week.’
Mrs Ashplant has said that she has a Ukrainian flag and bunting and balloons in the country’s blue and yellow colours. The staff will be wearing yellow t-shirts.
Yellow donation buckets will be also be available.
‘It’s actually quite exciting and it’s something that we really want to do properly,’ she said.
‘We want the money to go somewhere directly that we trust will make a difference.’
Once all the donations have been counted, the team will come together to discuss which cause or charity they wish to donate it to.
