John Silvester, who was first asked to assist in saving the attraction six years ago, said it deserved better.

It follows backlash from the community after the council attempted to stop silversmith Martyn Guille from selling Little Chapel-branded merchandise to visitors.

'My wife and I have questioned our decision to become involved many times but no-one else was prepared to step in,' said Mr Silvester.

He said the dual role fulfilled by the building – as a site of prayer and tranquillity for some, and a tourist spot for others – has meant the Foundation is constantly having to resolve conflicts of interest.

'The status of the Little Chapel had been reduced to that of a commercial football being kicked around by unreasonable demands.'

Volunteers will continue to work with the foundation, and Mr Silvester assured islanders that everything was in good hands.

Mr Silvester's wife Eileen has also resigned from the foundation.
