Circus performers shed tears of joy as the show did go on

THERE were tears of joy from Gandey’s Circus performers on Thursday as they took part in a show that very nearly did not happen.

Some of the artistes from Gandey’s Circus were all smiles as they gave a personal welcome to young audience members yesterday, a sharp contrast to the day before when they shed tears of relief that the show was going on after having to move the big top to Cambridge Park. Receiving the special welcome were, left to right, Sebastian Ogier, 5, Arin Smith, 5, Lola Greenway, 9, Isla Rodrigues, 8, Carter Smith, 7, and Willow Greenway, 11. The circus had been due to pitch its big top on its usual site in Victoria Avenue this week but heavy rain meant that tour director Binkie Beaumont had to come up with an alternative, and fast.

‘This time last week I was in Guernsey standing in the rain and not getting very far,’ he said.

Fortunately, last weekend St Peter Port parish officials agreed that Cambridge Park could be used and the first of the circus’ 10 shows took place on Thursday.

‘There were plenty of tears backstage. It was very emotional – we really didn’t think it was going to open.

‘It was packed and the audience were absolutely fantastic. They were like a pop concert audience, they were so appreciative.

‘We’d like to thank the island for the warmest welcome we’ve ever had in any venue.’

That welcome extended to people bringing cakes to the ticket office for the performers and many positive comments from dog walkers and passers-by on the park, he said.

Mr Beaumont also thanked its neighbours, Beau Sejour, the Duke of Richmond Hotel and Les Cotils, for their support.

St Peter Port constable Zoe Lihou said she had paid several visits to the site, including watching the lorries arrive on Tuesday and for a sound check by Environmental Health.

She was pleased that the parish had been able to help out.

‘It’s an opportunity for the island to make things happen and I couldn’t be happier.’

Mrs Lihou went with her husband and daughter to see the first show but had to leave early due to a prior engagement, but said she planned to see it all last night.

Yasmin, 11, said she had particularly enjoyed ‘the fire, ropes, trapeze and rockets’.

Beau Sejour has made 120 parking spaces available for people going to the circus from the 350 in its car park, close to its entrance and exit.

The last circus performance is on Monday.
