The Scouts set up Squirrels last year for children aged four to six.

They gathered at their Rue Mainguy headquarters to mark the anniversary with a range of activities, including a treasure hunt, followed by a party featuring cake and a rendition of 'Happy Birthday' sung around a roaring camp fire.

'We started last year with a trial and we didn't anticipate quite such a large demand – we have 72 Squirrels on the island now,' said leader Nicky Bourne.

Many of the children were joined by their parents at the party, where Scout leaders also announced plans to expand their Squirrels section from September.
