Harbour Carnival splashes down in Town this Friday
HARBOUR Carnival organisers have all their ducks in a row, and ready for Friday night’s big event.
‘It’s just a big party to thank everyone who assists the Round Table and the charities we help support,’ said organiser Joe Oliver.
‘This year we are luckily timed to coincide with the start of the school summer holidays so we hope to see lots of families down on the seafront.’
The Harbour Carnival is Guernsey Round Table’s big event of the year, with events including duck races, dinghy races, tug-of-war and man-powered flight, all culminating in a spectacular fireworks display.
‘We have a full ladies dinghy race of 16 teams, and already about eight teams in the tug of war,’ Mr Oliver said.
‘We still need more entrants for the man-powered flight competition, it’s open to anyone who wants to dress up and jump in the harbour.’
This year the event is raising funds for Safer, the local charity supporting and empowering those experiencing domestic abuse.
Mr Oliver said he wanted to thank everyone who has helped put on this year’s event.
‘From the scaffold company Access, who put up the scaffold for the man-powered flight for free, to Fairfield Wealth, who sponsor the tug of war. We are so thankful to all our suppliers and sponsors.’
A change for this year will see the carnival food village and bar on the Crown Pier open at noon.
The events kick off at 6pm, with live music from ‘Lateralus’, followed by the duck race at around 6.20pm, followed by the ladies’ dinghy race at 7pm, tug of war at 8pm, and the man-powered flight at 9pm. The event will close with fireworks at around 10pm.
‘The music is all indie, acoustic rock and pop. After Lateralus we have Space Soul, Bunny McBun and the Nightmares. It’s all local bands getting some great exposure.’
