I’ve earned my cuppa, says charity walker
A WOMAN has raised more than £500 in a sponsored walk in support of her husband, who has vascular dementia.
Margaret Domaille, 65, set off from Pleinmont at 10am on Saturday and reached the Liberation monument at 12.20pm.
Supported along parts of the walk by her granddaughter Abigail, 9, and greeted at the finish by husband Len, Mrs Domaille has raised at least £570 for the Guernsey Alzheimer’s Association, with that figure set to increase once she has finished counting donations.
‘I feel fine physically, it is a cause that has meant so much to me and I’ve been determined not to give in to my age,’ she said.
‘The Guernsey Alzheimer’s Association makes such a difference to our lives and it’s been sitting on my heart for a while.’
Mrs Domaille’s route saw her hike up from Pleinmont car park, past the Mallard and through St Martin’s, down Colborne Road into town.
Abigail walked from Pleinmont to the centre of St Martin’s before rejoining her gran before the finish.
‘I’m so proud of her and she’s very inspiring, I’m also really pleased to have raised £70 for her cause,’ she said.
Mr Domaille was in awe of his wife’s efforts.
‘It’s quite a way to walk. It’s a huge achievement and I’m very proud of her.’
Mrs Domaille added: ‘Dementia and Alzheimer’s can really change a person but Len’s my husband and I love him no matter what. The GAA makes our lives so much easier so I’m just glad to be able to support them.’
She also thanked her former employer, Guernsey Electricity, which sponsored the walk.
‘I cannot thank them enough. The reason I left was to care for Len and they’ve been so supportive since.’
She added that she was looking forward to a cup of tea from a cafe in Town.
‘I think I’ve earned it,’ she said.
