Prisoner cycles 1,407km in aid of Parkinson’s Guernsey

A prisoner has managed to raise more than £300 for local charity Parkinson’s Guernsey after completing a cycle ride equivalent to the length of the UK from inside Les Nicolles.

Anthony Jenkins undertook the challenge on an exercise bike in the prison’s gym, riding for 45 minutes six times a week from late December until the end of February.

He cycled a total of 1,407km, averaging between 20 and 25km per day.

Mr Jenkins became inspired to raise money for Parkinson’s Guernsey after his grandfather was diagnosed with the disease three years ago.

‘Watching him slowly deteriorate has been hard, so I wanted to do something for him,’ he said.

Coming back each day to get on the bike and complete his allotted 45-minute session in the gym was, Mr Jenkins said, the hardest part of the challenge.

‘Physically it wasn’t too bad, but mentally it was difficult having to do it every day.

‘Fortunately I had a friend of mine doing some of the rides with me and that gave me a lot of motivation.

‘I’m just glad I got it done in the end.’

The £304 he has managed to raise has all come from other prisoners.

‘I sent round collection sheets and people have been really generous, I’m chuffed.’

Parkinson’s Guernsey chairman Peter Neville, who was on hand to collect Mr Jenkins’ donation, said the money would make a significant difference to the charity.

‘It’s brilliant what Anthony has achieved, it’s a hell of a long way to cycle in challenging circumstances so we are really grateful for his efforts and fundraising.’

He said the funds would be spent on the provision of exercise classes and equipment for those living with Parkinson’s in the island.
