Now the hunt is on for a new volunteer to take up the role.

Mr Bartram said he would still be involved with the project and be on hand to pass on the knowledge he has accumulated in the past few years.

‘Full training will be given,’ he said.

‘It doesn’t need to be someone who has experience with livestock, it just needs someone with an open mind. When I began in the role I knew very little about cattle.’

Mr Bartram took on the role after a long career in finance.

‘I left Barclays after 35 years and just wanted to do something randomly different,’ he said.

‘I’d been doing some volunteering with Guernsey Conservation Volunteers and met Angela Salmon and Julia Henney and it went from there.’

He said the role was perfect for someone approaching retirement and looking for something a bit more ‘diverse’.

‘It's the old adage – experience preferred but not needed,’ he said.

‘Come with an open mind and you will soon learn to be confident with them, they will sometimes give you a friendly nudge, but they all, especially the young ones, like a good cuddle and a good scratch.’

La Societe president Trevor Bourgaize paid tribute to Mr Bartram’s contribution.

‘We are grateful to him for his hard work and commitment over the past few years, he will be a hard act to follow,’ he said. ‘I know Dave enjoys working with ‘his boys’, but after four years of organising the herd, and all that it entails Dave is taking a step back, he is going to be relinquishing the task of the day-to-day organisation in August.

‘However, he will be staying on as a volunteer.’
