Nine islanders complete Pathway to Caring course
NINE islanders have completed a new course which could set them up for a career in the care sector.
The Pathway to Caring course was a joint initiative between Health & Social Care and Employment & Social Security.
It was aimed at anyone not in work, helping them to define the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of specific job roles in the
health and social care sectors prior to starting work.
The inaugural part-time course saw participants work towards their caring certificates over seven weeks, including four weeks of practical work in a clinical setting.
‘I am absolutely delighted that nine candidates have successfully completed the first Pathway to Caring course and received their certificates,’ said Elaine Burgess, director of care delivery.
‘Going forward, we’re assisting the candidates with their continued journey into employment by facilitating conversations between them and the job centre, recruitment agencies, and private care homes. It is anticipated that, after a period of review, there will be scope for further Pathway to Caring courses in the future.'
The candidates were awarded their certificates at a presentation at the PEH’s La Corbinerie Clubhouse before speaking to potential employers within the care sector.
Jane Quemby said the course had given her more confidence surrounding employment and she was looking forward to a future working in care.
‘I came into this process so nervous and I’ve just seen a massive change,' she said. 'It’s been such a learning curve for me. I’d always worked in hospitality before and I’m not the most academic so I found the coursework aspect a bit challenging but I loved the practical work with the day patients.'
‘I found that everyone in the hospital from the staff to the patients were so kind and down to earth so I’m definitely hoping to go full on now working here.’
