He will be taking over from Colin Le Ray, who will be working closely with Mr Coppolo in the coming months ahead of the changeover.

‘I am hugely excited to take on the role of managing director and to lead a great ports team as we continue to focus upon growing and diversifying the business and building on our future ambitions,’ Mr Coppolo said.

His appointment follows a competitive and extensive recruitment process.

He first joined Guernsey Ports in 2010 as a safety manager, before becoming head of safety and compliance in May 2018, and being promoted to chief operating officer in March 2020. Prior to his appointment as chief operating officer, Mr Coppolo also acted as an adviser to a number of other regional airports.

Mr Coppolo has 21 years’ experience in the ports sector.

Guernsey Ports Board chairman Simon Thornton said Mr Coppolo would be taking lead responsibility for managing some of the island’s most critical infrastructure, ensuring the safe movement of vessels, aircraft, passengers, vehicles and freight.

‘Ross will have a clear focus on developing and diversifying commercial opportunities, increasing efficiency and continuing to provide a high standard of public service to islanders,’ he said.

States’ Trading Group managing director Simon Elliott added: ‘Ross has already proven himself to be an experienced, motivational and well-respected leader within our organisation.

‘Ross has substantial local knowledge and is well-equipped to embrace the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.’

Mr Le Ray is set to retire at the end of the year, after 40 years in the public sector.
