Zimba is a reminder to choose legal breeders

A ONE-YEAR-OLD French Bulldog who requires multiple medical procedures serves as a reminder to islanders to choose legal and responsible breeders when buying a puppy.

Zimba arrived at the GSPCA through no fault of his own, but he will need several thousand pounds-worth of treatment for his health issues.

He will require a nasal correction, which is usually seen in poorly or illegally-bred bulldogs, where a wedge of tissue has to be removed from each nostril so the dog can breathe properly.

‘This can be done at the same time as neutering, but the cost depends on the amount of tissue that needs removing and the time it takes. It could easily cost over £1,000,’ said GSCPA manager Steve Byrne.

‘The vet has noted that Zimba has poor hindlimb conformation, and was concerned that he might have patella luxation, and feel that it would be best the x-ray his hindlimbs first so they can assess what surgery might be needed and give an estimate for this, which is an additional cost.’

Zimba is a playful puppy who adores being round people and thrives on affection and companionship, but requires the surgeries to improve his quality of life.

The GSPCA said it saw cases each year of puppies requiring help due to bad breeding practices. The largest case of dog importation was in 2015 when 25 puppies from Slovakia were brought to the island on the ferry from St Malo with a final destination in the UK.

All of the puppies ended up at the GSCPA and were rehomed.

‘If you’re buying a puppy from a breeder then you need to do your research,’ said Mr Byrne.

‘Seeing the puppy before buying or adopting and seeing where it was bred and living can be helpful, as is seeing the dog’s mum. Finding a reputable breeder is really important, a lot of people in Guernsey will use reliable breeders that friends and family have used and recommended.’

Some people may wish to get their puppy checked over by their vet before buying, he said.

The GSPCA is raising money for Zimba’s care and surgeries.
