The annual awards have taken place since the late 1990s and recognises the best improvers within each year group, with each winner receiving a trophy and a tool voucher.
‘The awards recognise the effort the students are putting in and encourage them, the profile of the industry and the technology we have to keep up with,’ said motor vehicle lecturer Ian Tulie, who has been teaching the four-year programme at The Guernsey Institute for 23 years.
The awards have four local sponsors – Guernsey Auto and Electrical Supplies, Paul's Motors, Le Mont Saint Garage and Trust Ford.
Second-year student Gemma Le Page is currently working at Trust Ford.
‘An apprenticeship is good as you’re learning as well as being at work,’ she said.
Recent graduate Luke Winstanley said the tutors had been really supportive.
‘I have learnt a lot throughout my four years,’ he said.
First-year student Harry Esteves was also recognised.
‘It feels good to be recognised for your hard work and gaining knowledge in our fields,’ he said.
Students attend college one day a week, and spend the rest of the week working in a local garage.
There are currently 28 students across the four-year groups at The Institute.
‘This event is the highlight of the year for us in terms of how people are progressing and celebrating the achievements of the students,’ said Mr Tulie.
