Established in 2016, the charity provides men a safe space to create, make, talk and improve their sense of purpose.

‘We thought we would love to open it up to anyone once a week to use the facilities,’ said Men’s Shed trustee Jordan Solway, who put forward the idea to the charity committee.

The idea of inviting everyone, both men and women, is something that was meant to happen at the charity but has not occurred until now. It is entirely up to the individuals to decide what they do in the sessions, either making, chatting or both.

‘I’ve spoken to several women who want to learn to do these things, but there’s nowhere to go that’s casual and relaxed,’ said Mr Solway.

In the past few months Mr Solway said he had numerous women express interest in the upcoming sessions. Only people above the age of 16 are allowed to attend, but there is no limit on numbers. Individuals will be there who can help with the machines and tools, alongside committee members who are trained counsellors.

‘We haven’t set a trial period, it will continue unless it’s not needed, but we’re hoping it’s an ongoing thing,’ said Mr Solway.

There is a £5 per month membership fee to use the facilities, but Men’s Shed will not be pushing memberships for the first weeks of the initiative sessions.

The sessions begin on Thursday 16 January from 5.30pm to 8.30pm at Men’s Shed and will be held every Thursday after.

‘It’s a chance to meet new friends and have fun in a really nice social setting,’ said Mr Solway.
