‘A drink after work with your deputies’ is the brainchild of sitting deputy Andy Cameron, who said that he hit on the idea because of the challenge that island-wide voting presents candidates in getting to meet the public.
‘Door-knocking every household isn’t always realistic or welcome and our pubs are, in my view, vital community hubs,’ he said.
‘I’m really pleased that more pubs have opened than closed during this term.’
Deputy Cameron is emailing the idea to all deputies but so far 13 have said they were interested and so has a potential new candidate. While not all the deputies had committed to standing he said that one was still interested to hear people’s concerns and meet prospective candidates.
He has put a poll onto the Guernsey People Have Your Say group on Facebook with a list of 50 potential pubs.
‘The current frontrunner in the poll is The Britannia, and its landlord, Phil Martel, has been in touch – he’s very keen to host one of the evenings,’ he said.
‘I’ve also heard from Neil at Mojito and from the team at Little Big Brew Company – both are enthusiastic about hosting events too.’
The plan is for the gatherings to take place on Friday evenings between 4 and 6pm and they will probably start 10 weeks before election day.
