The large room on the library’s second floor has long been a popular study spot, but now it has a new carpet and a new ceiling on the lower level, while brand new lighting has improved the previously underlit space.
‘We’re thrilled to unveil this upgrade to our study facilities, and we’re deeply grateful to Social Investment Fund and the John Ramplin Trust for making it possible,’ said Chris Jordan, head of operations at the library.
‘The Hayward Room is extremely popular with students and people from all walks of life who need a quiet place to study or work, but in recent years it had become somewhat tired, and it needed an upgrade to ensure that it meets modern needs. The support from these wonderful community organisations has enabled us to transform the room, creating bright and comfortable surroundings that will improve the experience for all those studying and learning here.’
The work done so far was the first phase of the project.
‘Phase two will be to replace our ageing furniture with new ‘study pods’ – high-quality chairs and tables with built-in lighting, privacy dividers, and charging ports,’ said Mr Jordan.
‘These will not only be a huge improvement but will also more than double the capacity of the room.
‘The end result will be a state-of-the-art learning space that the whole community can benefit from, free of charge, all year round.’
The library has one study pod already – donated by OfficeMaker – and is seeking sponsorship to fund the rest. Businesses or individuals interested in sponsoring a study pod are encouraged to contact the library directly.
Social Investment Fund chairman Tim Barker said the library was an important and much-loved Guernsey institution.
‘It is good news that the facilities have been developed so that they meet the needs of this generation of Guernsey people of all ages, and enable the library to be used for a wide variety of events,’ he said.
As well as providing study space, the Hayward Room is also the main venue for the library’s events programme.
Mr Jordan said the library would host 19 events there as part of the Guernsey Literary Festival in a few weeks’ time.
‘We can’t wait for people to come to those events and make the most of the new and improved space.’
