Volunteers needed to line Liberation Day cavalcade route

There may need to be more barriers around the cavalcade route, if more volunteers do not come forward to help out.

Organisers of Guernsey’s 80th Liberation Day hoped to marshal the popular event with volunteers, but need 70 more community-spirited islanders to help.

‘Volunteering for Liberation 80 will make you a part of preserving Guernsey’s heritage and the celebrations on this historic day,’ said head of heritage services Helen Glencross, who is also a member of the Liberation Day organising committee.

‘We need islanders to help line the cavalcade route to ensure it is safe for the crowds. We know people won’t want to give up their whole bank holiday, which is why we’re asking for just two and a half hours of people’s time to help make this day the very best it possibly can be.’

The volunteers will enjoy a front-row seat for the parade, which will include historic vehicles, military vehicles and floats.

There is a shorter route for this year’s event, with the cavalcade starting at the Vaugrat campsite at 2pm on Liberation Day. The route will then go clockwise around the coast, arriving in Town at about 3pm.

The volunteer website states they need volunteers for L’Eree, St Peter Port seafront and along the cavalcade route.

Volunteers need to be at least 16 years old, and full training and support will be provided.

There is also a need for a small number of lead volunteers to co-ordinate the volunteer teams.

The cavalcade volunteer timings vary depending on where people are stationed on the route.

Those on the Pembroke section of the cavalcade route will be needed from 11.30am to 2.30pm, while those on the St Peter Port seafront section will be needed from 2pm to 4.30pm.

It is hoped enough volunteers will come forward to keep the route safe for everyone, but if not, it is understood more barriers will need to be installed along the route.
