The Mallard Cinema cancelled late night Saturday showings of the film A Minecraft Movie just an hour before they were due to begin at the weekend and has pulled any screenings of the film after 7pm from its schedule this week.
This is believed to be the result of Guernsey audiences mirroring the behaviour seen in the UK and US which has seen cinemas left covered in popcorn.
Based on the best-selling video game, the film, which stars Jason Momoa and Jack Black, tells the story of four misfits pulled through a magical portal into the Minecraft world.
In the film, Momoa’s character has to battle a baby zombie riding a chicken and this scene in particular has been greeted riotously by fans.
One teenager, who turned up for the 9.30pm showing on Saturday, said he was turned away by staff who said it was due to ‘anti-social’ behaviour at an earlier screening.
‘I was disappointed as I really wanted to see the film,’ said the teenager, who did not want to be named.
‘I’d seen social media clips of people going crazy in certain scenes, but that was in the US. Friends here had seen it earlier in the week and said there had not been a problem.’
Other young people were also left disappointed.
‘I booked tickets for my teenage son and a friend,’ said a parent who spoke to the Guernsey Press.
‘I was called and offered a refund at 8.24pm. I was told it was a problem with the film.’
He added that his son had already seen the film at a late showing at the cinema earlier in the week.
‘Although there was a lot of call and response to the action, there wasn’t any real antisocial behaviour like popcorn throwing.’
Despite underwhelming critics’ reviews, the film has exceeded expectations by making £233m. globally on its opening weekend.
The film has already taken £31m. at the UK-Ireland box office, and is on course to be the highest ever grossing video game adaptation.
