A dedicated team of 38 staff began their preparations a week earlier than usual, kicking off with planting at the roundabout at the base of St Julian’s Avenue. There, a vibrant display of red, white, and blue petunias now surrounds the flagpole, complementing the celebratory decorations.
Since then, the team has installed a special Liberation 80 carpet bed at North Beach, using a combination of silver and green foliage alongside a striking yellow succulent. In addition, dozens of hanging baskets and planters have been arranged throughout town, extending up to the harbour terminal to add colour and festivity across the area.
‘It’s been an extremely busy period for our team, but a hugely rewarding one,’ said Nick Ouseley, States Works assistant manager, land management.
‘Seeing St Peter Port bursting with flowers, flags, and decorations is a proud moment for us all as we prepare to mark such a significant occasion.
‘Our team is out early every morning to water and maintain the displays to ensure they stay in top condition. We take great pride in our work, and it’s an honour to help Guernsey look its best to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, and to create a beautiful setting for islanders and visitors during this very special anniversary.”
The land management team has also been tending to gardens and flower beds at other key sites including Candie Gardens, Saumarez Park, St Julian’s Avenue, and the Sunken Gardens, ensuring the island is in full bloom for the weekend.
