For Brittany Ferries, it was the busiest single day for continental arrivals to the island and doubled the previous highest number recorded for a single day.
Tourists were welcomed into the passenger terminal with live music performed by Star Stewart and VisitGuernsey representatives handing out information leaflets and offering directions.
One of those was Jennifer Thomas, who has been greeting passengers from St Malo for the past 10 days.
‘I’ve been greeting them in French and they’ve been very appreciative of my knowledge and for guiding them to their hotels mainly,’ she said.
‘When they’re here they’ve been coming into the office in the Market to ask extra questions, about Victor Hugo’s house mainly.
‘This is an extra busy day because it is Ascension Day in France and it is a bank holiday, but we actually found out that most people are staying for a couple of days.’
Laura and Emmanuel Champommiere had just got off the ferry for a three-day stay.
‘We wanted to visit Guernsey and see Victor Hugo’s house,’ said Mrs Champommiere.
‘We had heard that Guernsey is very nice and thought we might as well come and visit.’
Mr Champommiere said that he had visited Jersey when we was young.
‘We had the opportunity to go to Jersey again which I haven’t been to since I was a child, but we come to Guernsey first which we heard was very nice.’
Valentine Govindin and her friend Sandrine Le Stieu visited the island to celebrate a significant milestone in their friendship.
‘This is the “birthday” of our friendship we have been friends now for 40 years and wanted to do something to celebrate that,’ she said.
‘Also to celebrate that our family, friends and children are all friends together.’
They would be spending the day and one night in Guernsey, hoping also to visit Hauteville House, before moving on to Jersey.
