While the height of 55cm will stay the same, cases can now be 40cm wide and 23cm deep on services to the UK and Europe. This is about 50 litres.

The combined weight limit – for both this bag and a small handbag – will stay at 10kg.

New baggage measurers are ready to use.

Dave Cox, Aurigny's head of ground operations and deputy COO, said the new size would be a class-leading cabin baggage allowance, at a time when many other airlines were becoming increasingly restrictive.

‘We understand that people’s personal items and belongings matter,’ he said.

‘Whether it’s a laptop, medication, or just the things that make you feel at home, you shouldn’t have to fight for space to bring them.’

The new allowance is more generous than many other airlines. Easyjet allows 45x36x20cm, Blue Islands 55x36x20cm and Loganair 40x35x18cm.

Aurigny and Blue Islands currently share the Southampton route, with Aurigny using its ATR 72-600, while Blue Islands mostly operate the slightly smaller ATR 72-500.

Travellers will need to comply with the hand luggage measurements of the aircraft flying the route. Which airline is operating the service is stated when travellers book their tickets.
